  • At home with the homeless

“There is such a level of unspeakable contempt from the haves in society bestowing shame in the homeless. Homelessness stirs up fear: frightens and saddens us at the same time. Judgments are as harsh as the plight itself. Homelessness conjures up thoughts of isolation. Call it what it is: injustice, racism and a harsh reality. Often the most vulnerable suffer the most, including children, teens, single mothers, elderly and the ill.”
    Response by a friend

“May we never get used to the poverty and decay around us.
    A Christian must act.”
    Pope Francis @Pontifex 04/03/14

In the evening of April 3, 2014 I spent some time with Homeless Action! colleagues Adrienne Lauby, Jen Parr, Karen Martin and Adam Kirshenbaum. They inspired me, and confirmed that this is a noble effort worth pursuing. I went home and this is the poem which ensued.

012709 Homeless but out of the wind

    These are my people.
Not in any sense that I lead them,
    Or they belong to me.
These are the people I belong with.
These are the people I align with.

I find their lives and their experiences
    To be compelling and important.
I find their value as human beings
    On a par with the Pope and me;
To be of equal value, of equal worth, and of equal dignity.
I am no better than they are,
And they are no better than me.

There’s a famous prayer attributed to St. Francis.
The prayer was actually submitted anonymously.
Does that mean that a homeless God might have submitted it?

Make me an instrument of Your peace,
To be among those who need some peace.

If there is hatred, and sadness, and regret
As I sit on a cold doorstep,
    Where can I sow love?

    If I have done injury
And have injured those I love the most
    Where is there pardon?
The truth of my life, lived in the bushes
    Is the error.
    Can people see the truth
As my parents did the day they named me?

    I have so many doubts.
    I have so little faith.
    Where is faith and hope?
    It is here, in me.
    If I could only see.

    In my despair,
    The hope
Is in the intrinsic value of me
    Where I rest in darkness,
    And cold,
    And damp clothes
    That make me shiver.
Is there faith in awaiting the light?
    Are there leaders
And people who pull the levers of power
Who can act on my despair
    To give me some light?

And in the depths of sadness,
    From where I am now,
    Yes, I know joy.
    In the kindness of strangers
    Who may not know
    They have saved my life,
    My hope,
My faith in humanity’s inherent goodness

    O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console.
    On the streets
I am at one with my homeless brethren

    To be understood as to understand;
    I understand my sisters’ plight.

To be loved as to love.
I love without words in the grace of each moment.

For it is in giving that we receive.
As giving from the heart and the meager means
    Is the true gift.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
As I hope to be pardoned by all those to whom
    My mental illness
    And use of altering substances
    Or ordinary human frustrations
    Have caused me to offend.

Even as I too have been offended
    And then have pardoned,
Because that is the thing to do.

    And it is in dying
That we are born to eternal life.
It is not the dying in physical death.
It is the dying of selfishness and self centeredness.
That is the death we should desire

    This is where I belong;
    Among those without a residence.
    To bring the realization
    That first, and foremost,
    And always,
A just society gives a roof
    And warmth
And a daily resting place to each person
    No matter what.

  • Indio to Blythe

    Desert scenes
    Indio to Blythe
    Open desert and hot vista
Where I first heard the Western Wall
And cried for Lauren, the dancer

Place where war machines were tested
So they could go triumph on the African continent

    Driving space
To reflect on the seen and unseen
    Seen across the distance
    The potential
    Unseen in the near distance
    The potential

A place where a strange entrepreneur lived
He sold gas to the travelers
He raised llamas in the heat
He planted palm trees in rows and triangles and circles
Just like he planted conflict in his own family
I wonder if any of them escaped
    Across the desert

    Heat,
    heat and wind,
    heat and wind and vastness

    One hundred miles
    Across this space
    So many came west
and saw this as only the last desolate miles
    before the promised land
    so many went east
and escaped this way through desolation of space and heat
    the wind blowing them
further off the path of their lives

    One hundred miles
With little of the water of life
And wind to blow our cares
Back as dust in our faces
If that be where our mind is
or to blow them to other places.

    It’s another hundred miles
To the ones who sit in the vast space
    Or turn off the road
To see the thousand year old petroglyphs
And wonder what beauty there was
    When other people came here
To live, to carve, to gaze at the sky

    Indio to Blythe
    Blythe to Indio
    A passage in space
    A passing of time
A path through life, westward or eastward
Raw emotions heated to the edge of tolerance
    One hundred miles

  • Drops in the river – Lagunitas

Life like a river of being
    Lives like water
flowing past my place in the river
    Dark stories
    Eddies of grief and need.
Do I offer a genuine harbor
Or a weak line tied to a branch?

    Lives bounce on little waves
    Keeping heads above the water
    That’s all it takes sometimes
But when can they paddle to the edge
To stand and rest as the river flows past?

I’ve got a little extra to offer
    Something unexpected
Here is a float to hold
Here is a paddle if you are lucky enough to have a craft

    Without a boat
We are bobbing in the river of life.
When we fall below the surface
    Gasping

Wondering if it’s worth the effort
Will anyone throw a life raft?
We grasp as if for a floating log
Help me hold onto a branch
To keep from being swept away.
    Help me
    Help me

    Lives like water flowing past
    Fast and rough
    Slow and placid
    Water, ever flowing
    Like life
    Like wind
    Like thoughts

Are we swimmers or are we flotsam?

We’re all paddling toward another shore

Mist off the water as a new day dawns
    It obscures our fates
As it awaits the mid day sun

    Lives like water
    Drops in the river
Flow down to the ocean of being
    That is all being
As the river changes the life
The life in turn changes the river.

    Anne the Thinker

    Another week of dying
    Another week of crying
Another week of wondering, where do we go from here
    Another week of drinking
    Another week of thinking
Another week of silent desperation for the joy that has gone away
    Another week of living
    Another week of giving
Another week of hoping for the miracles of a small kind
    Another week of moving
    Another week of loving
Another week of life through a hazy future present

    Smiles and kisses
    Dreams and schemes
    Plans and hopes
    Made up this thing
    Random lucky breaks
    And hard work and sweat

    Smiles and kisses
    Dreams and schemes
    Happy children
    Long days and sleepy nights
    Words and looks
    Things from books

    Smiles and kisses
    Dreams and schemes
    Days of caring
    Days of sharing
    Lifetime legacy
    After all this

    Smiles and kisses
    Dreams and schemes
    Hopes and visions
    Small changes
    Big changes
    Major setbacks
Lived through with grace and stamina

    Smiles and kisses
    Dreams
    Dreams foregone and fulfilled
    Schemes aplenty
    But mostly simply
    Being
    Being together
    Through all this

    Smiles and kisses
    Simple joys
    Happy dinners
    Sons all grown
    All of them sharing
    Smiles and kisses
    Smiles and kisses

    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    Of love that never dies

    Light of days
    will always stay
in hearts and minds they say

    when we were young
    and nights were long
    joy was born through you

    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    Of love that never dies

    As time went by
    Our children’s lives
Filled days and nights, we two

    Joy in learning
    Ever burning
    And toys and laughter too

    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    Of love that never dies

    Growing together all our days
    adversities intruded
But never once in all that time
    Was discouragement included

    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    Of love that never dies

    Fidelity through thick and thin
    Was all we ever needed
    And better or worse
    As wedding verse
    Was lived as days
    Moved past unheeded

    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    Of love that never dies

    As fate had its say
    In final days
    And strength gives way
    In struggles
    We’ll always know
    Wherever we go that
    Precious time
    With hope in mind
    gives life, not death,
    its beauty.

  • A poem was found on the back of a recipe

(A poem was found on the back of a recipe in the back of the black journal.
In the margin it said, “What is free in the midst of the attack?”)

    In this moment
    It is right here
    The beauty of being human
    is our ability
    To know and reflect
    On what is here
    Right now

What is here and right now?
    The unknowable grace
    That has revealed itself
    In you
    Through you

    There are lots of opportunities
    To discover
    What is at peace
    In each moment
    Finding what is revealed
    In an ordinary moment
In the most extraordinary moment, and
    In the most discouraging moment

    Relax in this moment
    Be who you are
    Relax as it is
    As you are
    In this moment
    It is right here
    You are right here
    You are always right
    In this moment

    The grace of being here
Is that you have this moment
    To know and reflect
    That what you are being
Is the person you have become
    To reach this moment

Is the being you have become to reach this moment
The person you will be in the next?

    Peace be with you.

  • Life is too short for a love that lasts so long

    Rhododendron-3

This is a very good thing.
Health and someone to share it with
Lack of health and someone to share it with
Life is too short for a love that lasts so long
Love, and my dear loved one, show the eternal truths
This is a very good thing.
    Health or no health
    Happiness or no happiness
    Life and no life
These are each our being in a moment of eternal truth
This too is a very good thing
Health is, until it is taken for granted,
    But never again
The foibles of our lives are learned in these moments of no health
Love, and my dear loved one, show the eternal truths
This is a very good thing.
The blessing is not only the health, it is the love and connections with the loved ones
Life is too short for a love that lasts so long
This is a good thing in its way, in its connection, on this day.

This moment is a place we’ve never been before.
